Parent/Wrestler Handbook

  • The Handbook is designed to provide parents and wrestlers answers to any questions they may have. Read through the whole handbook first, then ask me any questions you may have. Please right click on page and print pages 3-5. Sign and initial at designated areas. Then return to Coach Joe Eddie.
  • Wrestling prepares a person to compete in the game of life. The wrestler is the one athlete that must meet their opponent and do battle completely on their own. No one can substitute and time outs are not possible. You have no one to check, screen, and block or assist you in anyway; there is no one to pass the ball to and no one to blame for your mistakes. When you win, you must display quiet pride and modesty; when you lose the responsibility is yours.

Wrestling is a special sport. In other sports, when contact is made, they blow the whistle and stop the action; in wrestling when contact is made, we’re just getting started.

No sport requires more sacrifice and discipline than wrestling. The individual, through self-denial, offers more of their character, than can ever be explained here. It is something you carry with you throughout your life, and through every trial, test, and tribulation. Wrestling, truly teaches life skills and values.

What is a Rancho Bernardo Wrestler?

A Rancho Bernardo Wrestler always follows the 10 Commandments of wrestling. These align with the pillars of persuing victory with honor.

    TEN COMMANDMENTS OF WRESTLING:
1 – Thou Shall Not Make Excuses
2 – Thou Shall Listen To Coaching Staff
3 – Thou Shall Not Miss Practice
4 – Thou Shall Not do other activities to risk injury
    during wrestling season
5 – Thou Shall Have Team Leadership
6 – Thou Shall Not Miss Weight
7 – Thou Shall Not Have Poor Sportsmanship
8 – Thou Shall Not Quit
9 – Thou Shall Not Be Intimidated
10 – Thou Shall Not Forget What Parents Have Done

    Practice times:

Practice will run from 2:50 pm to no later than 6:00 pm on school days. There will be practices for the first three Saturday’s of the season. These practices will run from 8-12.*
    *Subject to change

    Practice Dress:

All wrestlers must wear a shirt and shorts to practice. Their shirt must be tucked in. WASH YOUR WORKOUT CLOTHES OFTEN, HAVE CLEAN WORKOUT CLOTHES EVERYDAY. Once the head gear is issued it must be worn during all wrestling activities; stretching, live wrestling, drilling…

    Practice Attitude:

Team members are to show good character on the mat as well as off. Foul language will not be tolerated. Childish stunts, which include but are not limited to hazing, will not be tolerated (tricks, picking on others…). Hustle in and out of all demonstrations and coaching discussions. Get to work right after being told to do so. Once wrestling begins wrestlers are not to sit down. During demonstrations and discussions wrestlers may take a knee or remain standing. (We will have .Stance days.. These days the wrestlers will stay in their stance for the entirety of the practice.)

    Contagious skin rashes:

If a wrestler has any kind of skin rash, he must bring it to the attention of a coach immediately. Before a wrestler is eligible for competition, he needs to show a doctors note to the referee (If visible) granting him permission for competition. Covering the rash is NOT acceptable for competition. There is a form that needs to be picked up from the coach to take to the doctor to clear them for competition.

    Equipment:

Each wrestler is responsible for all equipment issued. Equipment is to be turned on the school day after the wrestler last competes. A $100.00 deposit or $100.00 check made out to RB Wrestling is required. The check will not be cashed and will be returned once equipment is returned. There will be a fine for lost equipment. The cost for equipment lost is as follows: Head gear $20, Team Warm-up $45, Singlet $45, Team Bag $30.

    Practice Absence Procedures:

If a wrestler is going to be absent from practice on any occasion, A PARENT must call Coach Joe explaining why before the practice begins. I will check my messages before every practice. So by the time practice begins everyone will be accounted for. A parent call does not excuse an absence. Excused absences are deemed by coaching staff. Unexcused absences could result in dismissal from the team.If you know you will miss practice for an appointment or family function, you must have a parent contact my voicemail in advance. The practices MUST be made up in advance to your appointment. To make up a practice you must meet with me to discuss how these will be made up. TWO individual workouts must be done for every one practice missed. An individual workout is done by working with one of the Coaches for 15 Minutes. During this time
calisthetics will be done. It will be intense. Missing practice is not a punishment. The point is to make up lost time. There is an exception to a practice being made up and will be cleared on an individual basis.

    Vacations:

Wrestling falls at a tough time with Poway unified school district. There are three vacation times. Thanksgiving break Christmas break and February winter break. Please try not to plan family vacations through this time. If you do the coaching staff needs to know ASAP.

    Injury Policy:

    1. If you are injured you are still required to attend practice, dress for practice and do what you can or is deemed you can. (Learning moves, drilling, pushups, conditioning) If you feel your injury is so severe that you can.t practice, I must be contacted before hand. You will still be required to be there to run errands and help out other wrestlers.
    2. If you feel the need to see the trainer. (Robbie Bowers), you must dress for practice, see a coach and go at 2:30 or Lunch. If your practice time comes up before he is done with you, you will need a note from him sending you back to practice and time you were in and out. If he is not in or there is more then two wrestlers in his office Come back to practice immediately.

    Meet Guidelines:

We are a team and you must always cheer on your teammates. After every match you wrestle you must not show any emotion. WIN OR LOSE. You will run off the mat after shaking the opposing coaches hand and go outside and jump rope for 10 minutes.

    Home meets (Duals):

Every wrestler must attend the dual from start to finish. We will need everyone to move the mats to and from the wrestling room.

    Dual-day Attire:

Wrestlers will wear to school the Blue button up team shirt with a tie, Slacks, belt and appropriate shoes. This is to stay on all day until weigh-ins. After weigh ins they will put on singlet and warm-ups. (Wrestling shoes may be put on right before warm-up).

    Weigh-in:

For home meets all wrestlers will need to be to the room by 3:00. We will hold a pre weigh in and a light practice until actual weigh-ins. We will do the actual weigh-in about 1 hour before the meet starts. (4:00-5:00) after we do pre weigh-in and light practice all wrestlers are to be back in Dual-Day attire.

    Food:

Wrestlers will not usually have time to go eat after weigh-ins. So they will need to bring or have brought there own food. This must not be junk!

    Away meets (Duals):

We will always meet right after school. Unless we leave before school ends. We will meet in wrestling room and check weight. . ALL WRESTLERS MUST GO AND LEAVE WITH THE TEAM.

    Tournaments:

We compete in tournaments almost every weekend during season. On one day tournaments (Saturdays) we will always meet in the circle in front of the school unless other wise stated. We meet early anytime between 5-6AM. So make sure you pay attention to times. Wrestling tournaments usually last most of the day.

    Tournament Day Attire:

All wrestlers must wear to school the RB Wrestling POLO to weigh-ins. After weigh-ins they must change into singlet and warm-ups and stay in this for the entire day. They may take their singlet off after they are done wrestling. ALL WRESTLERS MUST GO AND LEAVE WITH THE TEAM.

    Awards:

All wrestlers who place at a tournament must stay for awards ceremony and must wear team warm-ups to ceremony. Always shake the hands of other award recipients.

    Weigh-ins:

Weigh-ins will take place as soon as we arrive at the tournament site. WE WEIGH-IN AS A TEAM.

    Home Tournament:

Every year we host a tournament called the RB Invitational. This tournament is held the third Saturday in January in the High school gym. We are also planning on hosting a little kid tournament the day after our tournament. Help is needed at these events. All wrestlers will be required to help at these.

    Lineup Determination:

The varsity line-up is determined by wrestle offs. Wrestle off eligibility is determined by the coaching staff. We will limit wrestle offs to no more than 3-5 times a year. If a person is in the Varsity spot they must lose two straight matches by the same guy to lose their spot. All wrestlers must be within 3 lbs the day of wrestle offs to wrestle off for a specific weight. The Varsity line-up will first be determined based on the Squad Duals on the 3rd Saturday practice of the year.

    Lettering Criteria:

In order to earn a varsity letter you must earn 10 Varsity points. To earn a Varsity points you get 2 points for Competing in a Varsity tournaments and one for competition in a Varsity Dual meets.

    Academics:

All wrestlers are student athletes! Student comes first! However missing practice for homework is unacceptable. Wrestlers must be able to balance the school load and the athletic load at the same time. We will make time for tutoring if it deems needed.

    Academic Eligibility:

Wrestlers must maintain a 2.0 GPA and must be passing at least 4 classes.

    Academic Help:

We have mandatory wrestling tutorial during tutorial days at school. All wrestlers are required to report to a room TBD by the beginning of the tutorial period. Where they will sign in. Then if they want to go to another class they must get a tutorial slip from the room. They will then need to bring back the tutorial slip after the day is done. (By 2:35) If any wrestler needs extra help we will find a way to help them in order for them to succeed. Wrestlers will be required to get Blue cards during the season. This will be done every other Wednesday. They will get the Blue cards from the Counseling office.

    Parent Support:

We as a team need all the parent support we can get. With budget cuts we will sometimes need parents to drive kids to away tournaments. We also need parent support to help with fundraising. We also need support for our home dual meets and tournament.

    Booster Club:

The Rancho Bernardo Wrestling Booster club makes sure that all finances are needed for all three levels of competitions Jr. Program, Junior high and high school. We are looking for motivated individuals to take over office positions. PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR KIDS. Remember this is for the youth!
